Zombies of the Social Pyramid
Maya dragged herself into first period like a certified zombie, three hours of sleep and AP History anxiety doing their worst. Her normally defined curls had gone rogue overnight — now a frizzy halo that screamed, "I care but I'm pretending I don't."
"You look... enthusiastic," observed Sam, sliding into the desk beside her.
"The social pyramid demands sacrifices, Samuel. Today's offering: my dignity." Maya gestured vaguely at the injustice of it all. "Plus, the padel tournament is literally all anyone can talk about."
Padel. Of course. The school had decided to normalize this weird tennis-squash hybrid because apparently regular sports weren't exclusive enough. The tournament pairs were being announced today, and the Curation Committee (their student council's pretentious name for itself) had made it clear that who you partnered with would define your semester's social trajectory.
Maya's hair situation wasn't helping. She'd spent twenty minutes this morning trying to tame it, only to give up and throw it into a messy bun that was now drooping aggressively. Her mom had offered to help, but Maya had insisted she was FINE, because admitting you needed help with your hair at sixteen was basically admitting defeat.
"You're overthinking it," Sam said, which was rich coming from someone whose hair always looked artfully accidental. "It's just a game."
"That's literally what a zombie's victim says before they get eaten," Maya deadpanned.
When the pairings were posted, Maya froze. She was paired with Chloe — the Chloe, who sat at the apex of the social pyramid, whose hair always looked perfect, who'd probably never had a bad hair day in her life.
Chloe found her by the lockers. "Hey, so, I saw we're paired for the tournament." She seemed almost... nervous? "Full disclosure: I have the athletic coordination of a newborn giraffe."
Maya blinked. "Wait, really?"
"I only signed up because my mom made me. She thinks I need 'structured socialization.'" Chloe made air quotes. "Please tell me you're secretly good at sports."
Maya's hair chose that moment to escape its bun entirely, exploding into a magnificent frizz cloud. Chloe didn't even blink. "Honestly, hair goals."
And just like that, the zombie fog lifted. The pyramid wasn't so impenetrable after all — everyone was just winging it, even the people at the top. They practiced together after school, Maya actually laughing when Chloe accidentally hit herself with the racket. They lost their first match spectacularly, but neither of them cared.
Sometimes the best things happen when your hair looks terrible and you're too tired to overthink it.
