Zombies at the Pool Party

Maya's life had officially become a zombie movie. Three weeks into summer break and she was still the only one in her friend group who hadn't been invited to Chloe's legendary pool party. The party of the century. The social event that would determine who mattered and who didn't before sophomore year even started.

"You're coming," Jake said, sliding into the booth next to her at Mario's. He ordered spinach dip like it was the most normal thing in the world. "It's padel tournament day at the club. My cousin's partner bailed. You're in."

Maya stared at him. "I don't play padel. I don't even know what padel is."

"It's like tennis but cooler. Less pretentious." Jake grinned, and Maya's stomach did that annoying flip thing it always did around him. "Come on. Win the tournament, get invited to the victory pool party after. Easy."

"Easy," Maya repeated, trying to ignore how her hands were already sweating.

The tournament was a disaster. Maya spent most of the match swinging at air while Jake practically carried them to victory. But somewhere between the embarrassing serves and Jake's laughter every time she whiffed, something shifted. The zombie-like fog she'd been walking in for weeks lifted.

"Not bad for a rookie," he said afterward, tossing her a towel.

The pool party was everything Maya had dreaded and everything she'd wanted. Chloe's backyard shimmered with fairy lights and the turquoise glow of the pool. Someone had started a zombie walk competition in the shallow end. Maya stood at the edge, clutching her solo cup, watching Jake laugh with his friends.

Then Jake appeared beside her, dripping wet and grinning. "Hey, Spinach Breath."

Maya's face burned. "What?"

"From the dip earlier. You've had it in your teeth for like four hours." He stepped closer. "I was gonna tell you, but honestly? It's kind of been the best part of my day."

Maya's horrified laugh turned real. "You're the worst."

"I know." Jake's voice softened. "So, are you gonna stand here being a zombie all night, or are you getting in?"

Maya looked at the pool, at the people she'd been so afraid of, at Jake who'd somehow made everything feel different. She jumped in. The cool water shocked her system, and for the first time all summer, Maya didn't feel like she was watching her life from the outside anymore.

She was exactly where she was supposed to be.
