Zombie Walk and Blue Hair

Maya felt like a zombie. Three days of finals, four hours of sleep total, and now she was staring at her reflection with electric blue hair. Impulsive? Maybe. Necessary? Definitely.

"You look... intense," her little brother Leo said from the doorway, looking unimpressed as he ate cereal.

"Intense is good. Intense is memorable," Maya said, though her hands were shaking. She'd always played it safe. Straight A's, sensible clothes, hair that never made a statement. But something about turning sixteen and still feeling like a background character in her own life had snapped something inside her.

The community pool party was in two hours. Everyone would be there. Including Jay, who'd been in her biology lab group all semester and whose smile still made her forget how to form complete sentences.

"You gonna wash that out before the party?" Leo asked.

"Nope." Maya grabbed her towel. "You gonna tell Mom and Dad?"

Leo considered this. "Ten bucks."

"You're literally twelve."

"Twelve and going through a growth spurt. I need new shoes."

Maya rolled her eyes but grabbed two fives from her wallet. "You're the worst."

At the pool, she felt like she was walking through one of those zombie movies she and Jay had discussed that one time they'd actually talked about something besides osmosis and cell division. Everyone was moving in slow motion, laughing in clusters, while she stood at the edge feeling exposed and electrified at the same time.

Then she saw him. Jay. Standing by the snack table, hair wet from the pool, laughing at something someone said. Maya's heart did that embarrassing flutter thing.

She ducked behind a cluster of people, which was stupid because her hair was basically a neon sign saying LOOK AT ME.

"Maya?" A voice behind her. Of course.

She turned around slowly. Jay was smiling, but not like he was making fun of her. Just... smiling.

"Your hair," he said. "It's... wow."

"Wow good or wow you need an exorcism?" The words tumbled out before she could stop them.

Jay laughed. "Wow good. It's really cool. I mean, really cool."

Someone splashed water nearby, droplets catching the late afternoon sun like tiny jewels. Maya wiped her arm, suddenly hyper-aware of everything—the chlorine smell, the way Jay's wet hair curled at his neck, the way her own pulse was racing.

"I was kind of in a zombie state from finals," she heard herself saying. "And then it just... happened."

"Zombie mode, huh?" Jay stepped closer. "I get that. I was basically dead inside after history. Mr. Harrison's tests should be illegal."

They stood there for a moment, the party noise fading to background static. Maya felt something shift inside her, like a piece clicking into place.

"You wanna get in the water?" Jay asked. "I promise not to splash you. Much."

Maya looked at her blue hair in her reflection in someone's sunglasses, then at Jay's genuine smile, and felt something loosen in her chest. She wasn't just background anymore. She was electric blue, exhausted, and standing exactly where she wanted to be.

"Yeah," she said. "Yeah, I'd like that."
