Zombie State at the Padel Court

padelpapayazombie

I showed up to the padel courts operating on forty minutes of sleep, moving through the world like actual zombie prey. The kinda situation where your limbs feel borrowed and your brain is buffering.

"You good, bro?" Marcus asked, bouncing a ball against his racket.

"Never been better," I lied, adjusting my glasses that kept sliding down my nose.

We were supposed to play doubles against Chloe and Jason—aka, the two people I desperately did not want to embarrass myself in front of today. But life doesn't check your schedule before it serves you catastrophe.

At lunch, I'd somehow acquired the entire cafeteria's attention. Just me, my tray, and a dramatically spilled papaya smoothie that had decided to paint my white tshirt orange. People actually gasped. Chloe might have laughed—I couldn't tell through the fog of my own humiliation.

Now here we were, and I was swinging at air while Jason served like he was training for the Olympics. Every time I missed, I felt it in my soul.

"Focus, Sam," Marcus muttered under his breath. "You're overthinking it."

He wasn't wrong. My internal monologue had reached "panic spiral" territory, complete with overanalysis of every microexpression Chloe made. Did she think I was clumsy? Weird? Not worth acknowledging?

Then the zombie state actually worked in my favor. I was so tired I stopped caring. Stopped performing. Just started moving instinctively—swing, step, return. My body remembered what my exhausted brain had abandoned.

We won the final point against Jason and Chloe, and for once, nobody was watching me like I was about to faceplant into the turf.

"Not bad," Chloe said afterward, nodding at me like I was actually a person worth respecting. "For a zombie."

I laughed, and it wasn't even fake.

Sometimes the breakthrough happens when you're too tired to care about falling flat.
