Zombie Sphinx Friday
Maya dragged herself into third period English feeling like a certified zombie. Three AP classes, volleyball practice, and her phone blowing up at 2 AM from That Group Chat would do that to a person. She slumped into her desk next to Jordan, her best friend since seventh grade who was somehow radiating actual human energy.
"Dude, you look dead," Jordan whispered, sliding her a chocolate muffin. "Eat. You literally forgot to pack lunch again."
"It's fine. I'm fine. Everything's fine," Maya lied, accepting the muffin like it was mana from heaven. "What's got you so hyped anyway?"
Jordan's eyes lit up like they'd just discovered a new conspiracy theory. "Okay, so hear me out. The escape room downtown? The new Egyptian one? Riley's brother says it's impossible. There's literally a sphinx that gives you the hardest riddle ever, and nobody's solved it under fifteen minutes."
Maya snorted. "And you want us to waste our Friday night getting roasted by a sphinx animatronic?"
"First of all, it's not animatronic, it's apparently legit. Second, Riley and Quinn are going, and you KNOW they're gonna post about how they crushed it. We can't let them win at life AGAIN."
That was the thing about Jordan — everything was a competition, everything was Us vs. Them, and somehow Maya was always along for the ride. But okay, maybe she needed a win. Maybe she needed something other than studying until her brain felt like mush.
"Fine. But if we fail, I'm blaming your overconfidence."
Fast forward to Friday night, and the sphinx wasn't even animatronic — it was this ridiculously detailed statue with glowing eyes and a voice that sounded way too ominous for something powered by batteries. The room was decked out in hieroglyphics, fake torches, and hieroglyphics that Maya pretended to understand.
"I speak only in lies," the sphinx boomed, and Maya had to physically stop herself from laughing. "The door before you holds two keys. One leads to freedom, one to eternal darkness. Choose wisely, young seekers."
Riley and Quinn were already arguing about logic gates and probability, while Quinn was literally pulling out a notebook to calculate scenarios. Maya caught Jordan's eye and realized they were both thinking the same thing: this was ridiculous and kind of amazing.
"Yo, sphinx dude," Maya called out, surprising herself. "What if we pick neither and just climb through that vent?"
The sphinx's glowy eyes flickered. A panel opened, revealing — of course — a vent that led straight to the exit.
Riley and Quinn stood there processing while Jordan literally picked Maya up in a hug. "YOU JUST OUTSMARTED A SPHINX BY BEING LAZY. THIS IS ICONIC."
They emerged from the escape room breathless from laughing, Riley and Quinn trailing behind, actually impressed for once. The night air felt different somehow — lighter, like she wasn't carrying everything alone.
"We're doing this again," Maya said, and Jordan fist-bumped her. "But next time, I'm solving the riddle the normal way."
"Sure you will, zombie girl. Sure you will."
Maya's phone buzzed with a reminder about her history project due Monday, but for once, she didn't feel like checking it immediately. Some zombie moments were worth staying awake for.
