Zombie on the Padel Court
Maya felt like a literal zombie as she dragged herself to the community center. Two consecutive all-nighters studying for finals had turned her into a walking corpse, complete with dark circles and a permanent fog in her brain.
"You coming to the padel tournament?" her best friend Kai had texted at noon. "Kyle's gonna be there."
That was all it took. Maya was somehow standing at the courts, her favorite papaya-colored tank top clinging to her skin in the humid afternoon air. Padel was basically tennis with walls and a cooler reputation at their school—everyone who was anyone played on weekends.
She spotted Kyle immediately, laughing with his friends near court three. His eyes met hers across the crowd and she felt that familiar flutter in her chest, the one that temporarily cured her zombie state.
"Maya!" Kai waved her over. "We need a fourth for mixed doubles. You in?"
Before she could protest or admit she'd never actually played padel in her life, she was holding a racquet. The game started. Maya missed the first three balls completely, her zombie reflexes betraying her. But then something shifted—her muscle memory from tennis camp years ago kicked in.
She dove for a ball near the wall, slamming it back perfectly. Kyle whistled from the sidelines.
"Nice shot, papaya!" he called.
"Papaya?" she asked later, sweaty but strangely alive.
"Your shirt," he grinned. "And honestly? It's kind of your vibe. Sweet but with this edge."
Maya laughed, and for the first time in days, she didn't feel dead inside. Maybe sleep-deprived zombie Maya could still win at something—especially with cute boys noticing her papaya "vibe." Whatever that meant.
She'd worry about decoding it tomorrow. After twelve hours of sleep.
