Zombie on the Padel Court

Maya stared at her reflection in the bathroom mirror. Dark circles under her eyes. Hair that had seen better days. She looked like a literal zombie after staying up until 3 AM scrolling through Instagram, comparing herself to everyone else's seemingly perfect lives.

"You got this, Maya," she whispered to herself. "First day at the country club. Make friends. Don't be weird."

Her older sister had scored them a summer membership at the exclusive Palm Valley Club, and today was padel tournament day. Maya had never played padel in her life—she'd watched like five YouTube tutorials and that was it. But apparently, it was THE sport among the popular crowd at her new school.

The Florida sun was already blazing when she stepped outside. The club was fancy. Like, actually fancy. A massive pool sparkled with crystal-clear water, and everywhere she looked, perfect-looking teens were lounging in designer swimsuits. Maya suddenly felt very small in her Target tankini.

"Hey! You're Maya, right?"

She turned to see a girl with the kind of effortless hair that Maya had spent fifteen years trying to achieve. "I'm Chloe. This is my brother Liam. We're down a player for mixed doubles—you wanna sub in?"

Maya's heart pounded. "Oh! Um, yeah, sure!"

The padel court was enclosed with glass walls, kind of like a transparent room. Liam handed her a racquet. "You know how to play?"

"Totally," Maya lied.

The game started. And okay, padel was actually fun. It was like tennis but way more chaotic—you could hit the ball off the glass walls, and points went on forever. Maya wasn't terrible, thanks to her tennis background.

But then it happened. Her phone buzzed in her pocket on the sideline. She stole a glance during a break.

Her ex-best friend had posted a story. Hanging out with Maya's former group. Without her. They looked so happy together. Like they never even needed her.

Something in Maya cracked. The exhaustion hit her all at once. She felt like that zombie again—dead inside, just going through the motions.

"Maya? You okay?" Chloe asked during a water break.

Maya looked at the water bottle in her hand. At the palm trees swaying in the breeze beyond the court. At these two strangers who'd welcomed her into their game.

"Yeah," Maya said, and for the first time all day, it wasn't a lie. "Actually, I think I am."

She missed her old friends, yeah. But maybe—just maybe—she was building new ones. And they seemed pretty cool.

"Good," Liam said, tossing her a fresh ball. "Because you're actually crushing this. We're totally winning."

Maya smiled. Maybe this summer wouldn't be so bad after all.
