Zombie Mode Padel Match
I was definitely operating on zombie mode. Two consecutive nights of grinding till 3 AM will do that to you. My phone buzzed – Maya's fifth text in twenty minutes.
'U coming or what? Padel courts booked for 4'
Running out the door with my racquet bag half-zipped, I didn't even notice the sky turning that ominous purple-gray until the first rumble of thunder rolled through. Great. Perfect weather for my first time playing padel with the girl I'd been crushing on for three months.
The courts were covered but open-sided, rain slashing through at angles. Maya was already there, stretching in those neon green shorts that somehow made everything look effortless. Her brother Mateo was leaning against the fence, grinning like he knew something I didn't.
'You ready to get destroyed?' Mateo called out. 'Or are you still asleep from gaming all week?'
'Funny,' I shot back, though he wasn't wrong. My brain was definitely still loading.
We started playing, and somehow, the exhaustion made everything sharper. My reflexes were on autopilot. I returned shots I had no business reaching. Maya kept laughing every time I dove for the ball, hair wild, cheeks flushed from the cold air.
Then it happened – lightning struck somewhere close, the whole court flickering like a broken strobe light. For a split second, the world went white. And in that flash, Maya turned to look at me, and the way she smiled – not the polite friend smile, but something else – hit harder than any bolt from the sky.
'You're actually not terrible,' she said, adjusting her ponytail. 'For someone who looks half-dead.'
'Thanks, I think?' I laughed, running a hand through my soaking hair.
We kept playing until Mateo finally called it, shivering and muttering about his 'perfectly engineered game plan' being ruined by weather. Maya walked me to my bike, the rain still coming down.
'Tomorrow,' she said, like it was already decided. 'Same time. But maybe sleep first?'
'Yeah,' I said, trying to play it cool while my stomach did actual backflips. 'Tomorrow.'
Pedaling home in the downpour, soaking wet and exhausted, I realized I hadn't felt this alive in weeks. Zombie mode officially deactivated.
