Zombie Mode Off

Maya was deep in her third consecutive YouTube rabbit hole when her phone buzzed. Mrs. Chen next door needed emergency pet coverage - her daughter's flight got delayed, and someone had to watch Barnaby (the cat) and Duke (the dog) for the weekend.

Maya said yes, because that's what you do when you're fifteen and trying to prove you're responsible enough for the phone plan upgrade she'd been begging for since seventh grade.

The first night was straight-up chaos. Barnaby, a fluffy orange tabby with major attitude, spent three hours hissing at Maya from behind the sofa like she was personally responsible for everything wrong with the universe. Duke, a golden retriever with zero chill and maximum enthusiasm, kept bringing her his slime-covered tennis ball like it was some precious offering, drooling everywhere like a broken faucet.

Maya sat on Mrs. Chen's pristine white couch, surrounded by animal chaos, scrolling through Instagram Stories where everyone seemed to be at Jake's party without her. Again.

"I'm such a zombie," she muttered to Duke, who was now aggressively wagging his tail and making whimpering sounds that sounded suspiciously like laughing. "Why am I like this?"

But weirdly, Duke didn't care that she wasn't at the party. He didn't care that she'd worn the same hoodie three days in a row or that her skincare routine was basically "hope for the best." He just wanted her to throw the ball and scratch behind his ears. And Barnaby, once Maya finally earned his trust with premium wet food (she read the ingredients label, she's not a monster), deigned to sleep on her chest, purring like a tiny motorboat.

Something shifted in Maya's chest that weekend. While her classmates were busy performing coolness for each other, Maya was here, being chosen by a cat who hated everyone and loved by a dog who loved everyone. Duke would stare at her with these soulful eyes like she'd invented belly rubs, and Barnaby would actually meow at her when she walked in the door.

By Sunday, she'd abandoned Instagram entirely. She taught Duke to shake paws (he learned in five minutes, somehow) and discovered Barnaby's secret obsession with being brushed in exactly one specific spot behind his left ear.

When Mrs. Chen finally returned, frazzled and grateful, Maya didn't want to leave.

"You're a natural with them," Mrs. Chen said, handing her an envelope with way too much money. "Anytime you want to earn extra, just let me know."

Walking home, Maya felt lighter. The zombie feeling had lifted. She'd missed the party, yeah, but she'd found something better - a version of herself that didn't need validation from people who wouldn't remember this weekend anyway.

She texted her best friend: "Dude, I think I'm gonna start a pet-sitting hustle. Also, I'm adopting Duke. Not even joking."

Her phone buzzed back: "LMAO ask me how I know ur obsessed now also literally DO IT"

Maya grinned, typing out a response. Maybe freshman year wasn't going to be so bad after all.
