Zombie Mode at the Pool Party
Maya felt like a zombie. Not the cool, dramatic kind from movies—the awkward, exhausted kind who'd spent three hours curling her hair for Jason's pool party only to want to hide in the bathroom immediately upon arrival.
"You coming?" Chloe called from the pool edge, already swimming laps like she owned the place. Chloe, who'd somehow become her best friend through nothing more than sitting next to each other in algebra, now moved through teenage social waters with effortless grace. Maya, meanwhile, felt like she was doggy-paddling through life.
"Maybe in a bit!" Maya forced a smile, clutching her plastic cup of green smoothie like a shield. Her mom's wellness phase meant she'd brought spinach juice to a pool party. The can's contents looked like something that had already been through a person's digestive system. Perfect.
That's when she saw it: a stone sphinx statue perched bizarrely on the diving board, staring impassively at the chaos of splashing teenagers. Some joke from earlier?
"Nice smoothie." Jason's voice made her jump. He stood dripping wet, grinning that easy grin that made half the sophomore class lose basic motor functions. "What's in it?"
"Spinach," Maya said, then wanted to die. "And... other green things?"
Jason laughed. It wasn't mean. "Bold choice. Hey, truth or dare?"
Maya's heart did something concerning. "Dare?"
"Drink that whole thing in one go, then jump off the diving board."
The sphinx seemed to be watching. This was it—the moment. Either she'd back down and spend the rest of high school as the girl who brought spinach juice to parties, or she'd embrace her weirdness and cannonball into legend.
She chugged. It tasted like lawn clippings and regret.
"Zombie mode ACTIVATED," she announced, wiping green from her mouth. Then she sprinted toward the pool, toward the sphinx's stone gaze, toward Jason's widening smile, toward whatever came after.
The water hit her like cold reality. When she surfaced, sputtering and triumphant, Chloe was whooping from the other lane, and Jason—ridiculously, wonderfully—was high-fiving the sphinx.
"Spinach girl!" someone yelled. Not as an insult. As a title.
Maya grinned, feeling properly awake for the first time all day. Zombies could swim, apparently. And maybe, just maybe, that was okay.
