Zombie Mode at the Pool

Maya stared at herself in the bathroom mirror, finger-combing her messy brown hair for the third time that morning. Another day of sophomore year, another attempt to look like she had her life together.

"You good, Maya?" Her mom called from downstairs. "Baseball tryouts are today. Remember?"

Right. Tommy's big moment. Her brother had been talking about nothing else for weeks, convinced that making the JV team would finally make him popular. Maya nodded at her reflection, grabbed her backpack, and headed out.

She felt like a zombie most days anyway – shuffling through classes, half-listening to friends gossip about who liked who, pretending to care about prom planning when it was still months away. The routine had gotten old by November.

"Hey, wait up!" Maya's best friend Chloe jogged to catch her at the corner. "You coming to my place after school? We're finally going swimming in her new pool."

Maybe this was what she needed. Something different. Something that wasn't the same old cycle of school, homework, repeat.

Tommy's baseball tryouts were a disaster. He struck out twice and then tripped over his own feet in the outfield. Maya found him sitting on the curb afterward, staring at his cleats like they'd betrayed him.

"That was humiliating," he muttered. "Everyone saw."

"So what?" Maya sat beside him. "You tried something new. That's brave."

Tommy snorted. "Since when is trying out for baseball brave?"

"Since when is caring about what strangers think worth it?" Maya countered. "I'm done being a zombie about everything. I'm going swimming with Chloe. In public. With this hair." She gestured at her head. "No makeup. Just... me."

Tommy actually laughed. "You're kinda savage today."

"Maybe." Maya stood up and offered him her hand. "But at least I'm not just going through the motions anymore. You coming? We can teach you to swim properly this time."

"And let you see me in swim trunks? Hard pass." But he stood up anyway.

Walking toward Chloe's house, Maya felt something shift. She was still tired, still unsure about a million things, but at least she was actually feeling it instead of sleepwalking through her life. The zombie mode was officially over.
