Zombie Mode at the Plate

Sam walked into school feeling like a total zombie—three hours of sleep because of that stupid physics lab that refused to work. Their brain was basically static at this point. Everyone else looked so awake, so vibrant, while Sam was just shambling through the hallway like the walking dead.

"You okay? You look rough," said Jordan, sliding up beside them at the locker bay.

"Running on pure zombie mode today," Sam mumbled, fumbling with their locker combination. "Think I died sometime around second period and my body hasn't gotten the memo yet."

Jordan laughed. "Well, snap out of it—baseball tryouts are today. You said you were finally gonna sign up."

Right. Baseball. Because apparently Sam's brain at 11 PM last night decided that joining the team would fix their entire social existence. Now, at 2 PM, standing in the outfield while Coach Peterson yelled something about hustle and grit, Sam realized they'd made a terrible mistake. Their arms felt like noodles. Their coordination was completely shot.

"Baker, you're up!" Coach shouted.

Sam stepped to the plate, the bat feeling impossibly heavy. The first pitch came—swing and a miss. Second pitch—another whiff. People were watching. This was it. This was the moment they died of social awkwardness.

"You're thinking too hard!" Jordan yelled from the bench. "Just swing at the orange thing!"

Orange thing? What was that supposed to mean? But then Sam saw it—this beat-up practice ball, faded to a weird orange-pink color from use. The sun caught it just right as it came toward the plate. Something about that orange, that flash of color in the middle of this gray, zombie-fog day...

CRACK.

The ball sailed into left field. Sam stood there for a second, genuinely surprised. Jordan was jumping up and down, screaming something. For the first time all day, Sam didn't feel like a zombie anymore. They felt awake. They felt present.

"See?" Jordan grinned as Sam walked back, everyone patting their back. "Told you you just had to look for the orange thing."

"What does that even mean?" Sam asked, laughing.

"I don't know," Jordan admitted. "I panic-yelled. But you're on the team now, so... mission accomplished?"

Sam stood there, bat still in hand, heart actually beating for the first time all day. Maybe that's all it took—just finding something real, something bright enough to wake you up. Even if it was just some weird orange ball in the middle of a zombie day.
