Zombie Mode at Sunset Courts

I was running on pure zombie mode—third night in a row scrolling TikTok until 3 AM. My brain felt like fried circuits, but somehow I'd said yes to playing padel with the cool kids at Sunset Courts. Stupid, really.

The courts buzzed with energy. Carlos, this absolute bull of a guy, ruled the social scene there. He moved with that scary confidence that made everyone else feel small. I gripped my racquet, palms sweating, trying to look like I belonged.

"You gonna serve or what?" Carlos called out, grinning.

My first attempt was pathetic—weak, wobbly, barely cleared the net. The group erupted in laughter, but not the mean kind. Actually supportive? Since when did that happen?

Then I spotted her: Zara, sitting alone on a bench, peeling an orange. She'd transferred to our school last month and barely spoke. Something about her caught my attention—maybe it was how she moved like she didn't care what anyone thought.

I wandered over during a break. "Hey."

She handed me a wedge of orange. "You play like you're scared to mess up."

The truth hit hard. "Yeah. Pretty much everything lately."

"My dad says spinach greens you out for sports," she said randomly. "But real confidence? That comes from messing up and not caring who sees."

I took a bite of the orange. Tart, sweet, perfect.

Next game, I stopped overthinking. Let myself fail, laugh at my terrible backhand. Something shifted. The zombie fog lifted. Carlos high-fived me after a particularly chaotic rally. Zara watched from the bench, this tiny smile playing on her lips.

Later, as the sky turned that perfect orange sunset color, I sat with Zara again. No phone. Just talking. For the first time in months, I felt awake. Not zombie awake—really, truly awake.

"Same time next week?" she asked.

"Yeah," I said. "Definitely."

The world hadn't changed, but somehow I had. And that made all the difference.
