Zombie Mode and Party Truths

I felt like a literal **zombie** as I stood in the corner of Jessica's basement, my phone clutched in my hand like a lifeline. 2 AM exhaustion from finishing that AP History paper was hitting me hard, and I was seriously regretting agreeing to come. Maya, my best **friend** since seventh grade, was across the room laughing with the cross-country crowd, completely ignoring me.

"You look like you're dying," said Tyler, suddenly appearing beside me with two red cups. "Want one?"

I hesitated. The old me would've said no thanks and gone back to being awkward. But new me, the one trying to reinvent herself sophomore year, was tired of playing it safe.

"Sure," I said, grabbing a cup. "What's in it?"

"Just fruit stuff," he grinned. "My mom's weird health kick. Basically a **spinach** smoothie with enough sugar to hide the taste."

I took a sip and almost choked. "Dude, this tastes like straight lawn clippings."

Tyler laughed. "You should've seen your face! Okay, full disclosure—that was the experimental batch. But you walked right into that one."

Before I could respond, Maya appeared, grabbing my arm. "We're playing Truth or Dare. You in?"

I started **running** through excuses in my head—homework, early morning practice, my mom expecting me home—but then I caught Tyler's eye and he winked.

"I'm in," I heard myself say.

Twenty minutes later, I was sitting in the circle when someone asked Tyler about his breakup with Chloe last month. The whole room went quiet waiting for his answer.

"Okay, fine," Tyler said, rubbing the back of his neck. "I'm the one who ended it. She kept pressuring me to, you know... and I wasn't ready. All my friends were talking about it like it's no big deal, but I felt like I was the only one who wanted to wait."

"**Bull**," someone muttered from the circle.

"For real though," Tyler continued. "Like, since when did deciding to wait become something people have to hide?"

I thought about how I'd been feeling the same way—like everyone else was growing up faster than me, like I was falling behind just because I wasn't ready for certain things. Looking around the circle, I realized pretty much everyone was nodding.

Maybe we were all just pretending to have it figured out.

"Yeah," I found myself saying. "Same."

Maya looked over at me, really looked at me, for the first time all night. "You too?"

"Me too," I nodded, finally feeling like I could breathe.

The basement suddenly felt less like a social minefield and more like... just people being real with each other. Maybe this whole reinventing myself thing wasn't about becoming someone completely different. Maybe it was about getting comfortable enough to just be who I actually was.

"Hey," Tyler said, tossing me his phone. "Group selfie?"

"Only if I can fix this spinach in my teeth first," I said, grinning.

Somehow, this zombie mode night was actually turning into something pretty decent.
