Zombie Mode and Papaya Smoothies
Third period AP Chem, and I was officially operating on zombie mode. Three hours of sleep because someone (me) decided binge-watching a show until 2 AM was a solid life choice. My brain felt like it had been replaced by cotton candy, and not the good kind.
"You okay?" Marcus whispered, sliding into the desk beside me. "You look like death warmed over."
"Living the dream," I muttered, resting my head on my chemistry textbook. "Just waiting for the sweet release of weekend."
My cat, Beans, had decided 3 AM was the perfect time to practice parkour across my face. Thanks, Beans. Really appreciated.
"Rough night?" Marcus asked, actually looking concerned. He was that guy — effortlessly popular, somehow managed to shower, groom himself, and maintain human functionality despite our school trying to crush our souls.
"Beans decided my face was a trampoline," I said. "And I may have forgotten to do the stats homework. Again."
Marcus laughed, and something in my chest did that stupid flutter thing it always did around him. Not that I'd ever admit it. My emotional state was currently: sleep-deprived zombie + awkward crush vibes = disaster waiting to happen.
"Hey," he said, "wanna come over after school? My mom's making smoothies. She bought, like, five papayas on sale and has no idea what to do with them."
My brain short-circuited. Marcus? His house? Smoothies? Was this real life?
"Sure," I said, trying to sound casual and probably failing. "I mean, yeah. That sounds cool."
"Awesome. She also has way too much spinach from that CSA thing, so warning: green smoothies. But she promises they're actually good?"
I nodded, trying to process the fact that my social life had just gone from nonexistent to Marcus-inviting-me-over status in approximately five seconds.
Later, sitting at his kitchen counter while his mom blended papaya, spinach, and somehow made it taste amazing, I realized something. Maybe high school wasn't just about surviving until graduation. Sometimes it was about zombie mode, random papaya smoothies, and moments that felt almost like real life.
"Not bad," I said, tasting the weird green concoction.
"Right?" Marcus grinned, and for the first time all week, I didn't feel like a zombie at all. Just... alive. Weirdly, surprisingly alive.
