Zombie Mode and Papaya Smoothies

Maya was officially operating on zombie mode. Three consecutive nights of binge-watching The Last of Us will do that to you. She dragged herself through the school hallway, feeling like actual death, while her classmates seemed annoyingly fresh. How was everyone else functioning?

"You look rough," said Leo, leaning against his locker like he owned the school. "Running on fells again?"

"It's 'running on fumes,' Leo," Maya muttered, adjusting her backpack strap. "And yes. Finals week is trying to end me."

He laughed, and Maya's stomach did that annoying flip thing it always did around him. Because apparently her brain decided NOW was the perfect time to catch feelings. Junior year was already a mess without adding a hopeless crush into the mix.

Her phone buzzed. Group chat blowing up. Someone—probably Chloe—was organizing a post-finals hangout at the new smoothie place downtown. Everyone was going. Including Leo.

Maya's cat, Pancake, would judge her so hard if she bailed. Pancake, currently draped across her keyboard at home, had more swagger in one paw than Maya had in her entire body.

The smoothie shop was packed when she arrived, a kaleidoscope of trendy teens and aesthetic vibes. Maya spotted Chloe and the crew at a corner table. And there was Leo, looking unfairly good in that black hoodie he always wore.

"Maya! Finally!" Chloe waved her over. "You have to try this papaya smoothie. It's literally life-changing."

Maya approached the counter, her social anxiety kicking into high gear. Why did ordering drinks feel so high-stakes? The barista waited, pen poised. Her mind went blank.

"I'll... take the papaya one?" she managed, which came out more like a question.

"Coming right up."

When she returned to the table, smoothie in hand, she caught Leo watching her. He was sitting next to Jess—perfect, popular Jess who smelled like vanilla and confidence. Maya felt like the awkward side character in her own life.

Then Leo's Golden Retriever energy kicked in. He gestured to the empty seat across from him. "Hey Maya, saved you a spot."

Jess raised an eyebrow but said nothing.

Maya sat, hyper-aware of everything. The way Leo's knee kept bumping hers under the table. Accidental? Probably. Her brain would overanalyze it anyway.

"So," Leo said, "I was thinking we could study together for history? Since we're both basically dead inside right now?"

The table went quiet. Even Pancake would've paused mid-groom.

"Yeah," Maya heard herself say. "That'd be... actually great."

Maybe zombie mode wasn't so bad after all. Sometimes you had to reach your lowest point to find the good stuff—the papaya smoothies and the unexpected moments that made you feel, suddenly, remarkably alive.
