Zombie Mode

Maya dragged herself to the pool deck at 5:45 AM, feeling like the walking dead. Two weeks of summer swim practice and she was permanently operating in zombie mode—her eyes glazed, movements sluggish, brain fogged by chlorine and exhaustion.

"You alive out there, Martinez?" Coach Reynolds yelled, blowing his whistle piercingly.

"Barely," she mumbled, adjusting her swim cap.

By 2 PM, she'd collapsed onto her bed only to get a text from Lily: "Padel courts. Jesse's playing. You coming?"

Maya's stomach did that stupid fluttery thing. Jesse, with his messy hair and that smile that could power a whole small town. She'd been low-key obsessed since freshmen year. But showing up meant being seen, and being seen meant taking off the oversized baseball hat she'd been hiding under since middle school.

The hat was her armor. It covered the bad hair days, the breakout skin, the part of her that still felt like that awkward sixth grader who couldn't do a push-up in gym class without everyone laughing.

"I'll go," she typed back, hands shaking.

At the courts, the sun blazed. Padel balls ricocheted off walls with satisfying thwacks. Maya stood on the sidelines, hat pulled low, heart hammering. Jesse的高潮时 high-fived his friends, shirt clinging to his back with sweat. He looked alive in a way Maya hadn't felt in months.

"Hey!" Lily called. "We need a fourth!"

Maya froze. Me? Play? With Jesse?

"Come on," Jesse grinned, jogging over. "Unless you're scared of losing."

Something shifted. Maybe it was the zombie fog finally lifting. Maybe it was just that he'd noticed her. Maya reached up, pulled off her hat, and shook out her hair.

"Scared?" She smiled, really smiled, for the first time all summer. "Try terrified. For you."

Jesse laughed—it was better up close. "We'll see about that."

As she stepped onto the court, racquet in hand, Maya realized she didn't feel like a zombie anymore. She felt awake. She felt ready. And for the first time, she didn't need the hat to be brave.
