Zombie Hair Don't Care

zombiehairrunning

Maya dragged herself into third period chemistry feeling like a literal zombie. Three hours of sleep thanks to that AP History paper would do that to you. Her usually perfect hair—sleek, straightened to submission—was currently attempting a rebellion in the form of a bird's nest on top of her head. The neon pink scrunchie she'd attempted to use as damage control had made things worse. Much worse.

"Dude, you look dead," whispered Jake, sliding into the seat beside her. "Rough night?"

"Rough life," Maya muttered, resting her forehead on the cool lab table. "My hair decided to stage a protest. I think it's joining the natural movement. Without my permission."

He laughed. "It looks kind of cool, actually. Like, wild energy."

Maya snorted. "Wild energy? Jake, this is a cry for help."

But when she caught her reflection in her phone screen later, something shifted. Her curls were doing something... freeing. Spirals she'd spent years fighting were finally doing their thing, and maybe that wasn't the worst thing. Maybe always running from her natural hair had been exhausting.

The real revelation came at lunch when her friend Trinity exclaimed, "Wait, did you finally stop straightening? This is your HAIR? It's gorgeous!"

Maya blinked. "You think?"

"Girl, everyone's been wondering why you hide it," Trinity said, like this was obvious. "You've been serving flat-haired zombie aesthetic all year. This is an upgrade."

For the first time, Maya stopped running. From her hair. From expectations. From the fear that being herself wasn't enough. She was tired, yeah. A zombie from burnout and pressure. But her hair? Her hair was finally awake.
