Zombie Hair and the Lucky Hat

Maya had spent three hours trying to perfect her hair for Jackson's party. Three. Hours. The Pinterest tutorial had promised "effortless beach waves," but somehow she'd ended up with what looked like a zombie who'd just crawled out of the ocean after a shipwreck.

"You look... intense," her little brother Leo said from the doorway, barely looking up from his phone.

Maya glared at him through the mirror. Her hair was basically a frizzy explosion. "Intense? Leo, I look like I died three weeks ago."

"That's the vibe though, right? Grunge?" He shrugged. "Just wear your lucky hat."

Her lucky hat was this vintage fedora thing she'd found at a thrift store—the kind of hat that nobody wore anymore, which was exactly why she loved it. She grabbed it and jammed it on her head, ignoring how her hair splayed out underneath like a frightened creature.

Jackson's party was already chaotic when she arrived. People were jumping on the furniture, someone had broken a lamp, and the music was so loud the floorboards were practically vibrating. Maya immediately regretted coming. She didn't even like Jackson that much—she'd just been crushing on him since seventh grade, and he'd finally noticed her existence last week.

"Maya!" He appeared through the crowd with a red Solo cup in hand. "You made it!"

She nodded, tugging her hat down lower. Her hair was probably still visible from the sides, frizzy and wild and completely humiliating.

"You look cool," Jackson shouted over the music. "Like, edgy. Different."

Maya froze. "Different?"

"Yeah! It's a vibe." He gestured at her general appearance. "The hat, the hair... it's like you're going for that zombie apocalypse aesthetic, right? It's sick."

Zombie aesthetic? Was that even a thing?

But then she noticed other people glancing at her, nodding, like she was in on some secret trend she didn't even know existed. Suddenly Maya wasn't the girl with the disastrous hair anymore—she was the girl with the intentional look. The girl who was confident enough to pull off something weird.

She reached up and adjusted her hat, letting a little more of her frizzy hair show. "Yeah," she said, surprising herself with how steady her voice sounded. "Exactly."

Jackson grinned. "I knew you'd get it."

Maya smiled back, her frizzy zombie hair and her lucky hat and her suddenly not-so-terrible night all coming together in a way she never could have planned. Sometimes the disasters were actually the best part.
