Zombie Goldfish Protocol
Friday night and I was basically a **zombie**—three hours of sleep, two AP exams, and one cafeteria incident I'd rather forget. My best friend Kai texted: *house party. Ella's. be there or be square.* Classic Kai, using boomer unironically.
I spent forty minutes on my hair, threw on my favorite beanie—okay, technically it's Maya's **hat**, she left it in my locker last week, and I may or may not be "forgetting" to return it. Don't judge. It smells like her vanilla shampoo, which is exactly the point.
The party was packed. I spotted Ella immediately, holding court by the **cable** box like she was Netflix royalty. Some juniors were arguing over which movie to watch, but nobody cared. We were all just there for the social currency.
Then came the incident.
Tyler Miller—Ella's ex and general human disaster—decided to show off his new pet. A **goldfish** named "Captain Fin." In a tiny bowl. At a crowded party. What could possibly go wrong?
"Bro, you have to **bear** witness to this," Tyler slurred, gesturing dramatically with the bowl. "Captain Fin is about to become a LEGEND."
The fish jumped. I'm not making this up. The goldfish actually launched itself out of the bowl, did this impressive little arc, and—splash—landed directly in Maya's hair. I've never seen someone scream and laugh simultaneously.
Ella's crush, Sam, tried to help by grabbing a handful of napkins. Maya was crying-laughing, Tyler was trying to recapture his legendary fish, and I just stood there, clutching Maya's hat like an idiot.
Later, on the porch, Maya found me. Her hair was damp, her makeup smudged, but she was smiling. "So," she said, "are you ever going to give me my hat back, or what?"
I handed it over. Our fingers touched. My heart did this stupid flutter thing.
"Keep it," she said. "It looks better on you anyway."
I walked home at midnight, zombie-tired but weirdly alive. Sometimes the worst nights become the best stories. Sometimes a goldfish jumps and everything changes. Captain Fin, you absolute legend.
