Zombie Fox, Orange Dawn

Maya dragged her feet through the hallway, feeling like a literal zombie. Third period APUSH, fourth period Pre-Calc, lunch where she sat alone scrolling through her phone—the routine was suffocating. Everyone else seemed to have it figured out: the friend groups, the relationships, the effortless swag. Maya was just... existing.

That Tuesday, she'd finally had enough. Instead of heading to the cafeteria, she slipped out the side door near the gym and found herself behind the school, near the old baseball field. That's where she saw it—an orange fox, its coat blazing against the dull February gray.

It wasn't just that it was beautiful. The fox was digging through someone's discarded lunch, completely unbothered, living its best life. It caught her eye, tail flicking, almost like it was mocking her with its pure confidence.

"Same," Maya whispered, and the fox actually paused.

The next day, she came back. Orange peel in hand this time—a clementine from breakfast. The fox appeared again, and this time it approached. Not like a timid animal, but like it was doing her a favor. It ate from her hand.

Something shifted. Maya started carrying oranges in her backpack, started wearing her favorite orange hoodie unapologetically. The fox became her secret—her twice-daily reminder that some creatures just *were*, without questioning their place in the world.

Two weeks later, when Sarah from her English class asked, "Hey, nice hoodie, where'd you get it?" Maya actually answered. Started a conversation. The zombie feeling faded, replaced by something new—maybe not full-blown confidence, but at least the beginnings of it.

The fox stopped showing up after a month, but by then Maya didn't need it anymore. She'd started sitting with Sarah and her friends at lunch. Started raising her hand in class sometimes. Started feeling like herself instead of some zombie version of who she thought she should be.

She still kept an orange in her backpack, though. Just in case.
