Zombie Fox at the Pyramid

Maya dragged herself to the padel court like a zombie after finals week. Her best friend Sierra had forced her out of the house, insisting that 'fresh air and exercise' would cure her academic burnout. Yeah, right.

The outdoor court blazed under the July sun, the heat radiating off the artificial turf. But what made Maya's heart do a little flip was who was standing there—Leo, the cute sophomore from her AP Euro class, bouncing a ball against his racket with casual ease.

"You got this, foxy lady," Sierra whispered, using the nickname she'd given Maya last month after Maya had pulled off the sneakiest locker room prank of the semester. Maya rolled her eyes but secretly appreciated the confidence boost.

"Want to join?" Leo called over, gesturing to the empty court beside him. His friends were already organizing into teams, forming what looked like a social pyramid with the varsity players at the top and everyone else at the bottom.

Maya hesitated. She wasn't exactly athletic. But then Leo shot her that grin—the one that made his brown eyes crinkle—and she found herself walking over.

"I'll partner with her," Leo said, and Maya felt something shift inside her chest. Something warm and dangerous.

They played for an hour. Maya missed easy shots. She served into the net twice. But every time she messed up, Leo just laughed and said, "No stress, Maya, you'll get it." He didn't make her feel small. He made her feel like she belonged.

Afterward, the group collapsed by the water fountain, passing around bottles and recovering. Maya's hair stuck to her forehead in sweaty strands, her legs burned, and she was probably the worst player on the court. But when Leo sat beside her and handed her a cold water bottle, their fingers brushing, she decided this was officially the best afternoon of her life.

"Same time next week?" Leo asked, and Maya found herself saying yes before she could overthink it.

As they walked home, Sierra smirked. "So... Leo, huh?"

"Shut up," Maya said, but she couldn't stop smiling. Maybe being a little zombie-like from studying wasn't so bad if it led to moments like this. Maybe this summer wouldn't be so boring after all.
