Zombie Brain, Cat Heart

bearrunningcatzombie

Maya dragged her feet through the hallway, feeling like a total zombie after staying up until 3AM finishing that history essay. Junior year was absolutely eating her alive. "You good?" asked Jordan, falling into step beside her. "Barely," Maya muttered. "My brain is officially mush."

Her phone buzzed – Mom, reminding her about the tutoring session after school. Because apparently perfect grades weren't enough anymore; now she had to help freshmen who were struggling. Sometimes she felt like she was running on a treadmill that kept speeding up, and she couldn't jump off.

At lunch, the usual crowd sat in their assigned spots. Maya used to be part of that circle, back when things with Alex were still... whatever they were. Now she sat near the windows with her cat ear headphones on, even though they weren't playing anything. It was her armor. "Weird girl," she heard someone whisper. Probably one of Alex's friends.

The weight of it pressed on her chest – the expectations, the loneliness, the constant feeling that she was failing at being a teenager. She escaped to the library, her sanctuary, where she didn't have to perform.

That's where she found it: a tiny calico kitten hiding behind the dumpster, mewling like its heart would break. Maya's own heart did something stupid and fluttery. She knelt down, ignoring how her favorite jeans would get dirty. "Hey there, little bear," she whispered, because it had these fierce, stubborn eyes despite being half-starved.

The cat – she mentally named her Bear because why not – butted her head against Maya's palm, and suddenly everything didn't feel so heavy. The zombie feeling lifted. The running-toward-nowhere sensation paused.

"You need a home," Maya said aloud, and realized she was talking about herself too. Maybe they could help each other survive. She scooped Bear into her jacket. Mom would kill her, probably. Dad would say they couldn't afford vet bills. But for the first time in months, Maya felt brave enough to fight for something she wanted.

The zombie teenager walked back into school, the calico cat warm against her chest, finally ready to face whatever came next.
