Zombie Bear Cat Night

The campfire crackled as Maya applied her third layer of zombie makeup, carefully shading around her eyes for that perfectly dead look. Tomorrow was the school's haunted house fundraiser, and she needed this practice run. Her phone buzzed — **cat** emoji from Jordan.

"You coming to the bonfire?" he'd texted earlier. "Everyone's gonna be there."

Maya groaned. The bonfire meant cute flannels, Instagram-worthy moments, and pretending she wasn't absolutely terrified of social situations. She checked her reflection in the phone screen — grey skin, hollow cheeks, dark circles. Honestly? She kind of looked like how she felt after two weeks of finals.

"Zombie mode: ACTIVATED," she muttered, smearing more fake blood.

The woods between her house and the beach were dark, but Maya knew them by heart. Until something moved.

A massive shadow emerged from between the trees. **Bear**. Actual bear. Maya's brain short-circuited. This wasn't some suburban mom story about raccoons in the dumpster — this was a real, live, probably-hungry **bear**.

She froze, totally forgetting her zombie makeup probably made her look like the world's weirdest snack. The bear sniffed the air, tilting its head.

Then a tiny calico cat — Mrs. Henderson's missing **cat**, actually — darted from nowhere and hissed at the bear like it owned the entire forest. The bear blinked, apparently confused by this tiny creature's audacity, and lumbered away.

The **cat** trotted up to Maya and rubbed against her zombie-painted leg, leaving grey fur all over her jeans.

"Did you just... save me?" Maya whispered. "From a **bear**?"

Her phone buzzed again. Jordan. "Hey, you okay? You're missing the s'mores."

Maya looked at her reflection in the dark phone screen — zombie makeup, **bear** encounter, hero cat. Suddenly, trying to be cool at the bonfire seemed ridiculous. She'd literally just lived through a horror movie.

"On my way," she texted back. "But you won't believe what just happened."

Nobody did. That was fine. Maya sat by the fire, marshmallow roasting, still wearing her zombie makeup like war paint. She'd survived a **bear**, been saved by a **cat**, and was now casually hanging out with the cutest sophomore in class. Zombie mode, indeed. She felt more alive than she had in weeks.
