Zombie at the Pool Party
I felt like a **zombie**. Not the cool, dramatic kind from movies — more like the awkward shuffling kind, stumbling through Maya's end-of-summer pool party with zero social battery and maximum secondhand embarrassment.
"You good, Elena?" Maya asked, handing me a paper plate. "You look, like... dead."
"Just tired," I mumbled. The truth? I'd spent three hours getting ready, curling my hair that was now frizzy from humidity, and picking an outfit that said "effortlessly cute" instead of "trying too hard." Classic teenage girl struggle.
Then I spotted him. Jake. **Swimming** laps in the **pool** like it was his job, all tan shoulders and effortless confidence. My heart did that stupid fluttery thing. I'd been crushing on him since seventh grade, when he'd let me borrow his pen in math and smiled like he actually meant it.
Here's the thing about Jake — he was popular. I was... Elena. The girl who sat in the back, the one who said "literally" too much, the one who was currently standing alone by the snack table while everyone else splashed and laughed.
"Hey, Elena!" Jake was suddenly there, dripping wet, towel-drying his hair. "You coming in?"
"Maybe," I managed. Then something in his expression shifted. His eyebrows drew together. That tiny crease between them.
"You have..." He gestured at his own teeth. "Like, green stuff."
My face burned. The **spinach** artichoke dip. From earlier. I'd literally been walking around with green flecks in my teeth for possibly HOURS while talking to multiple people, including possibly Jake.
"Oh my GOD," I whispered. This was it. The social death I'd always feared. I should just go home, change my name, move to another country.
But Jake just laughed. Not mean laughing. Real laughing. "Dude, that dip is legendary. I legit had three servings."
Then he did something unexpected. He splashed me. A handful of pool water right in my face.
"Jake!"
"Come in," he grinned. "Unless you're too cool for the pool?"
Something in my chest loosened. I kicked off my flip-flops.
And for the first time all night, I didn't feel like a zombie anymore. Just Elena, jumping into a pool with her crush, spinach dental disaster and all. Being a teenager was weirdly exhausting and occasionally humiliating, but moments like this? They made the chaos worth it.
