Zombie at the Pool Party

The backyard shimmered with heat waves as Maya stood at the edge of the **pool**, clutching her towel like a lifeline. Three months ago, she'd earned the nickname **Zombie** after falling asleep in AP Bio and drooling on her textbook—the incident had been immortalized in the group chat with a horrifyingly unflattering photo. Tonight, at Jake's end-of-summer bash, she was determined to shed that identity.

"Yo Zombie, you gonna stand there all night or actually get in?" called Tyler, cannonballing into the water with a splash that soaked Maya's sandals.

Maya forced a laugh. "Yeah, yeah, I'm good. Just... warming up."

Her stomach did backflips. Being around Jake made her feel simultaneously electric and paralyzed. Last week, she'd started this ridiculous health kick—green smoothies, kale chips, actual **spinach** salads—because she'd read somewhere that confidence starts from within. Instead, she'd just spent three days feeling vaguely nauseous.

She'd even gone so far as to bleach her old black hoodie, attempting to reinvent herself as someone who wore color. Someone who wasn't Zombie Maya, always tired, always on the margins.

"Hey." Jake appeared beside her, dripping wet, his hair plastered to his forehead. "You okay?"

Maya's heart hammered. "Yeah. Totally. Why?"

"You look... I don't know. Intense?" He grinned, and it was genuinely kind. "Also, you have something in your teeth."

Mortification washed over her. The spinach smoothie. The spinach salad. The spinach everything.

"But seriously," Jake continued, "come in. The water's perfect. And Zombie Maya is way cooler than people give her credit for."

She stared at him. "You think?"

"Dude, you wrote that essay about mental health in lit class. That was raw as hell." He splashed water at her. "Come on. I won't even tell anyone if you still have zombie reflexes."

Maya dropped her towel. Whatever happened to reinvention? Sometimes the most radical thing you could do was just show up as yourself—spinach teeth and all.

She jumped. The water rushed over her, cold and shocking and absolutely alive.
