Zombie at the Pool Party

I felt like a straight-up zombie dragging myself through Jessica's backyard gate. Three hours of sleep will do that to you. The sun glared off the pool like it was personally attacking my exhaustion.

"Marcus! You made it!" Jessica waved from the water, her neon orange bikini impossible to miss.

I pulled my baseball cap lower. My hair was doing something weird—too curly, too frizzy, too everything. Why did I agree to this? Pool parties were basically social torture chambers where you had to be half-naked AND conversational simultaneously. Worst combo ever.

"Stop lurking and get in here!" yelled Tyler, that gorgeous soccer player I'd been lowkey crushing on since freshman year.

I hesitated. My pale torso against everyone else's summer glow? Not exactly a vibe. But then I caught Jessica's eye—she knew what it took to get me here. She'd spent twenty minutes last period hyping me up in the bathroom mirror.

"You got this," she mouthed.

I peeled off my shirt, feeling every pair of eyes like lasers. But then I jumped.

The water hit me like reality check—shocking, refreshing, weirdly freeing. Something shifted. I wasn't the quiet kid who sat behind Tyler in homeroom anymore. I was just another person swimming, laughing when someone splashed me, existing without overthinking every micro-movement.

Later, dripping on the patio, Tyler handed me a towel. "You're actually pretty chill, Marcus. We should hang more."

I adjusted my now-soaked hat and grinned. "Yeah. We should."

Walking home, sunset painting everything gold, I didn't feel like a zombie anymore. Just a person who'd spent the afternoon finally, actually, living.
