Zombie at the Pool Party

Maya stood at the edge of the crystal-blue pool, clutching her iPhone like it was the only thing keeping her anchored to reality. Three weeks of summer academic boot camp had turned her brain into complete mush—she was basically a zombie at this point, surviving on iced coffee and anxiety.

"Maya! You made it!" Chloe called from the pool, her friends giggling like they shared some secret joke that Maya wasn't in on.

The moment she'd been dreading all summer. Pool parties. The ultimate teenage social minefield. She smoothed her oversized t-shirt over her swimsuit, feeling exposed and awkward and everything in between.

Then chaos erupted.

Buster, her neighbor's golden retriever who'd somehow slipped through the gate, came tearing across the patio at full speed. A cannonball of golden fur and pure joy.

Buster didn't slow down. He launched himself straight into the pool, sending a massive wave of water crashing over everyone. Chloe's friends shrieked. Drinks went flying. The perfect Instagram moment, destroyed.

Maya's iPhone—the one containing her entire social life, three unfinished TikTok drafts, and her carefully curated aesthetic—was gone. Drenched. Dead.

Panic washed over her. But then she heard it. Laughter. Real, genuine laughter.

Chloe was doubled over, soaked hair plastered to her face. "Did you SEE that?!" she gasped. "Your dog is a LEGEND."

"He's not my—" Maya started, but she was already smiling. The knot in her chest loosened.

Chloe's mom, Lila, came rushing over with towels and these tiny colored packets. "Everyone okay? Here, take these vitamins! They're packed with electrolytes!"

Maya stared at the packet. Because nothing said 'I'm a chill teen' quite like accepting wellness supplements from someone's mom at a pool party.

But then Chloe was there, dripping wet and grinning. "Don't listen to her. She's trying to make us all believe in her wellness phase."

"Is that before or after the keto phase?" her friend Jordan called out.

Maya laughed, and it felt... easy. Like maybe pool parties weren't actually that deep. Maybe she wasn't a zombie. Maybe she was just a girl whose iPhone had sacrificed itself to the water gods, and somehow, that was okay.

"So," Chloe said, pulling a towel around her shoulders. "You coming in?"

Maya looked at her dead phone, then at her soaking wet t-shirt, then at Chloe's easy smile.

"Yeah," she said, toeing off her flip-flops. "Yeah, I'm coming in."
