Zombie at the Deep End
Maya felt like a zombie as she dragged herself to Jenna's pool party. Finals week had turned her brain into mush, but socially, you couldn't say no to the first party of the season. Not when you were trying to climb out of the background and actually become someone people noticed.
The pool was already packed—popular kids floating on inflatables like they owned the water, couples making heart-eyes at each other, and then there was Maya, standing by the snack table like a total NPC. She'd spent forty-five minutes picking out this swimsuit, agonizing over whether it was too basic or trying too hard. Classic overthinking.
Then she spotted him—Caleb, the quiet skater boy she'd been lowkey crushing on since September. He was setting up a speaker system on the patio, wrestling with a tangled ethernet cable like his life depended on it.
"Need help?" Maya heard herself say before her brain could protest.
Caleb looked up, surprised. "Yeah, actually. This thing is fighting back."
As she helped untangle the mess, they started talking—really talking. Not the fake small talk she'd been doing all year, but actual conversation. Music tastes, weird dreams, how school felt like a hamster wheel sometimes.
Everything was going perfectly until someone pointed at her face, giggling. "You've got something in your teeth..."
Spinach. From the spinach dip she'd nervously eaten earlier. Maya's face burned hotter than the summer sun. She wanted to teleport out of existence, but instead she just laughed. "Well, that's embarrassing."
But Caleb didn't laugh. He just smiled, kind of... impressed? "Honestly, that's brave. I would've straight-up left."
And just like that, the zombie feeling faded. Maybe fitting in wasn't about being perfect or cool or never having spinach in your teeth. Maybe it was about finding people who didn't care when you did.
The sun was setting when Caleb asked, "Same time next week? There's this band playing downtown..."
Maya grinned, finally awake. "Absolutely."
