Zombie at the Deep End

Maya dragged herself to Jordan's pool party feeling like a straight-up zombie. Three hours of sleep will do that to you — thanks, TikTok spiral at 2 AM.

"You look deceased," said her best friend Becca, already doing cannonballs off the diving board.

"I AM deceased," Maya muttered, yanking her baseball hat down lower. The oversized brim was her armor today. Under it: unwashed hair, zero makeup, and approximately 0% of her usually curated vibe.

Then she saw HIM.

Caleb. The new guy. The one with the stupid-perfect jawline and a laugh that made her forget how to words.

He was standing by the snacks, wearing — no joke — the exact same vintage band tee she'd obsessed over for weeks.

Maya's zombie brain short-circuited. Instead of playing it cool, she PANICKED. Like full-on internal screaming.

She turned to literally walk — okay, fine, SPEED WALK — toward the exit. But then her flip-flop betrayed her. It caught on the concrete, and suddenly Maya was gracelessly pitching forward toward the pool.

Time slowed. She saw the water rushing up. Saw Caleb turn. Heard Becca's "MAYA NO-"

SPLOSH.

She went under fully clothed, hat and all.

When she surfaced, sputtering, the entire party had gone SILENT.

Caleb was there at the edge, extending a hand. He was grinning.

"Epic entrance," he said, pulling her up. "I'm Caleb, by the way. Nice hat."

Her hat. It had floated off and was currently bobbing dramatically in the deep end like a tiny fabric ship.

Maya's face burned. But then she looked at him — really looked. He wasn't laughing AT her. He was just... present. Solid.

"I'm Maya," she said, water dripping from her nose. "And I swear I'm normally not this chaotic."

He winked. "We'll see."

Later, floating under the summer stars with her reclaimed hat pulled down just right, Maya realized something: sometimes the messiest moments become the best stories. And being a little bit of a zombie? Kinda worth it.
