Zombie at the Deep End

I'd been awake since 3 AM finishing my AP History flash cards, so basically I was a **zombie** shuffling toward Maya's pool party. My mom had forced that green smoothie on me—kale, **spinach**, something green and fuzzy—and I could still taste it. Not the best confidence booster for facing Tyler, who'd finally noticed me after three years of invisibility.

The backyard was already packed. Tyler stood by the **pool** table, his laugh cutting through the humidity. I froze. Social anxiety hit like a physical wall.

"Hey!" Maya's golden retriever, Barnaby, burst from the crowd, **swimming** through legs like a furry torpedo. He slammed into me, knocking my phone into the pool.

"BARNABY!" Maya shrieked.

I stared at my sinking phone. Tyler was watching. This was it—the moment my social life died.

But then Tyler jumped in. Fully clothed.

He surfaced, iPhone XL held triumphantly. "Got it."

The whole backyard went silent. Then someone clapped. Then everyone cheered. Tyler grinned at me, water dripping from his hair, and I realized something: the cool kids weren't actually aliens from another dimension. They were just people who made mistakes and did awkward stuff.

"Thanks," I managed, and for the first time in three years, my voice didn't crack.

Maya's **dog** chose that moment to shake himself dry right next to Tyler, spraying water everywhere. We all laughed—real laughter, not the fake kind I'd been practicing in my mirror.

"Spinach smoothie," I blurted to Tyler later. "In my teeth. That's why I was hiding earlier."

He laughed. "Dude, I have Cheetos dust on my fingers right now."

I wasn't invisible anymore. I wasn't a zombie. I was just a girl with a rescued phone and a boy who jumped into pools fully clothed.

Sometimes the most embarrassing moments become the ones that save you.
