Zombie at the Deep End

Maya stood at the edge of the pool party, clutching her container of spinach artichoke dip like it was a lifeline. Which, basically, it was—her entrée into Jackson Carter's legendary end-of-year bash. She'd been crushing on him since seventh period English, when he'd read that poem about existential dread and actually made it sound not cringe.

"Hey! You made it!" Jackson materialized through the crowd of juniors, shirt already soaked through. "Is that... spinach dip?"

"Yeah. My mom's recipe." Maya's brain short-circuited. Who brings spinach dip to a pool party? Someone trying way too hard, that's who.

"Actually, that's fire. We were starving." He nodded toward a folding table littered with chip bags. "You're a lifesaver."

Before Maya could respond, a golden retriever rocketed through the sliding door, barking like it had just discovered a parallel dimension. The dog—"BOOMER!" someone screamed—leaped straight into the pool, cannonballing into a group of seniors who were NOT having it. Water everywhere. Chaos. Someone's phone definitely died.

Jackson dissolved into laughter. And that was it—Maya's social anxiety evaporated. She was laughing too, watching this absolute chaos unfold. For the first time all year, she didn't feel like a zombie from academic pressure and overthinking and the constant fear of being awkward.

"You okay?" Jackson asked, wiping water from his eyes. He was smiling at her. Actually smiling.

"Yeah," Maya said. And she meant it. "Yeah, I'm good."

Later, she'd discover she had a piece of spinach stuck in her teeth the entire conversation. Jackson would text her that night anyway. And somehow, between the dog-induced disaster and the dip and her flushed face, something real had started.

Not exactly the entrance she'd planned. But definitely the one she needed.
