Zombie at the Deep End

zombiehatpool

I looked like a straight-up zombie. No joke—three nights of falling down Instagram rabbit holes until 3 AM will do that to you. My eyes had that special dead-inside quality, and I was running on pure anxiety and an alarming amount of strawberry Fanta.

Tonight was Jordan's pool party. The. Pool. Party. Upperclassmen. Cute boys. Social suicide waiting to happen. And here I was, a lowly freshman, clutching my dad's vintage trucker hat like it was some kind of magical forcefield. The hat was legendary—faded blue with a weird fish logo, smell of old summer adventures and dad jokes.

"You're not actually gonna swim in that, are you?" My little sister leaned against my doorframe, looking entirely too pleased with herself.

"It's called aesthetic, Maya. Look it up."

"It's called you're overthinking everything again."

She wasn't wrong. I WAS overthinking. I'd been mentally rehearsing cool entrances and witty comebacks for seventy-two hours. My brain had officially imploded.

The party was already lit when I got there—actual fire pit going, Spotify playlist bumping, like forty people crammed into Jordan's backyard. I immediately posted up by the snack table, strategically located between the chips and guac and the exit. Safety first.

That's when I saw HIM. Lucas. The junior I'd been lowkey crushing since soccer season. Laughing with his friends. Shirtless. Not fair.

I adjusted my hat and tried to become invisible. Which worked perfectly until someone yelled "CANNONBALL!" and suddenly I was drenched. Like, completely soaked. My hair plastered to my face, my favorite hat dripping, standing there looking like a confused raccoon.

The whole deck went silent.

Then Lucas started cracking up. Not mean laughing—like, actually doubled over, tears-in-his-eyes laughing. And then everyone else was laughing too, and somehow I was laughing because what even was my life?

"Yo, that was legendary," Lucas called out, still grinning. "You good?"

"Never been better," I shot back, dripping water everywhere. "Tactical immersion. Very strategic."

"She's got a point," someone said.

Lucas motioned me over. "Come hang. We're doing chicken fights. You're obviously now recruited for team chaos."

My zombie brain short-circuited. Was this happening?

I adjusted my sopping-wet hat, squared my shoulders, and walked toward the pool like I owned it. Sometimes the worst moments become the best stories. Sometimes you just gotta cannonball into the deep end and see what happens.

And Lucas? Totally asked for my number. Dad hat and all.
