Zomberto's Colorful Hat

zombiesphinxhat

Zomberto was not like other zombies. He didn't want to brains. He didn't even want to scare anyone. He just wanted a friend.

Every day, Zomberto shuffled through the Whispering Woods with his sad gray face and patchy clothes. But on his head sat the most beautiful hat in all the world – a bright yellow sun hat with purple stars that his grandmother had sewn for him when he was just a regular little boy.

"ROAR!" Zomberto would try to say, but it always came out as a soft squeak. "Would anyone like to play?"

Rabbits hopped away. Birds flew off. Even the grumpy badger scurried into his hole. Everyone was afraid of the poor zombie boy.

One afternoon, Zomberto sat by a sparkling stream, watching his reflection in the water. A single tear rolled down his greenish cheek.

"Why so sad, little one?" rumbled a deep, mysterious voice.

Zomberto looked up and gasped. Before him sat a magnificent sphinx with golden wings and wise, glittering eyes. She was enormous, yet she smiled kindly.

"Everyone runs away from me," Zomberto whispered, clutching his colorful hat.

The sphinx tilted her head. "Tell me, what walks with shuffling feet, has a face so green and sweet, but has the kindest heart you'll ever meet?"

Zomberto thought hard. "A... zombie?"

"Not just any zombie," the sphinx said mysteriously. "A zombie whose grandmother sewed stars into his hat so he would always remember – love shines brighter than any scary face."

Zomberto's eyes went wide. "You knew my grandmother?"

"I know many things," the sphinx purred. "But the most important thing I know is this: true friends see with their hearts, not their eyes."

She touched her paw to Zomberto's magical hat. Suddenly, it began to glow with a warm, golden light that smelled like fresh cookies and sunshine.

"Now go," said the sphinx. "Your light will help the right friends find you."

Zomberto walked through the forest, and his glowing hat painted everything in gentle colors. A rabbit hopped closer. Then a fox. Then a whole family of deer. They didn't see a zombie anymore. They saw a friend whose heart shone as bright as the stars on his hat.

And that day, Zomberto learned that the right hat – and the right heart – can help you find exactly where you belong.
