Zola and the Magic Pool

Lily loved her backyard more than anything. Her orange cat Marmalade seemed ordinary, but Lily knew his eyes sometimes sparkled like tiny stars.

One hot afternoon, Marmalade led Lily behind the old oak tree. There, shimmering in the sunlight, was a pool she had never seen before. The water sparkled with colors that changed like a rainbow.

Marmalade jumped onto a smooth stone and meowed three times. Suddenly, the water began to bubble.

Up from the depths rose something that made Lily gasp.

It looked like a zombie! But not a scary one. This zombie was made of water and light, with seaweed hair and glowing pebble eyes. It waved its watery arms in a friendly dance.

"Hello!" the zombie gurgled. "I'm Zola! I've been waiting for you!"

Lily wasn't scared. "You're a zombie?"

"The friendly kind!" Zola did a little spin. "I'm the Pool's Dreamer. I make wishes come true."

Lily's eyes widened. "Can you really grant wishes?"

Zola smiled, and the water transformed. Suddenly, Lily saw herself opening a bright orange box that held exactly what she'd been wishing for—a puppy of her own.

"Those are your dreams," Zola whispered. "But the pool shows something more important."

The water shifted again. Now it showed Lily's grandmother, who had been sick. Lily's heart ached—she loved Grandma so much.

"True magic helps others," Zola said softly. "What do you wish for?"

Lily didn't hesitate. "I wish for Grandma to feel better."

The pool glowed golden. A single orange blossom—Grandma's favorite—floated to the surface.

"Your wish has been heard," Zola said. She pressed a glowing hand to Lily's palm. When Lily opened her hand, she held a beautiful orange stone that pulsed with warmth.

"Give this to your grandmother," Zola instructed.

The next day, Lily gave the stone to Grandma. The moment it touched her hand, Grandma smiled—really smiled—for the first time in weeks.

"I feel... lighter," she said.

Lily returned to the pool with her best friend Marco many times that summer. Zola taught them something important: "Kindness is the strongest magic of all."

On the last day of summer, Zola gave them each an orange seashell. "Whenever you need magic, remember: a true friend adds joy to every moment."

Lily still has that shell. And sometimes, when she looks at her orange cat Marmalade sleeping in the sun, she swears she can see tiny stars dancing in his fur.

The secret pool is still there, hidden behind the oak tree, waiting for children whose hearts are full of wonder.

And somewhere deep in its enchanted waters, Zola the friendly zombie is dancing, making magic for those who believe.
