Zippy's Magical Game

Leo loved his stuffed zombie, Zippy. Grandma had sewn him from bright green fabric with funny rainbow hair and one googly eye slightly larger than the other. Zippy wasn't scary at all—he was the best listener Leo knew.

Every afternoon, Leo carried Zippy to the park, where a magnificent palm tree stretched toward the sky. Its long fronds danced in the breeze like friendly fingers waving hello.

"Today's the day, Zippy," Leo whispered, bouncing his racquet. He was learning padel, a game like tennis but more fun. Mr. Rivera from next door was teaching him.

But Leo felt nervous. What if he couldn't hit the ball? What if everyone laughed?

Zippy seemed to smile bigger. Leo imagined his friend saying, "Zombies don't give up, Leo. We keep trying, even when our stitches come loose!"

The palm tree's shadow made a perfect court. Leo served the ball—SWISH—and it bounced against the tree trunk, then came soaring back. Leo swung his racquet and—WHAP!—perfect shot!

"You did it!" Zippy seemed to cheer in Leo's heart.

Mr. Rivera clapped. "Natural talent!"

Leo kept playing, Zippy watching from the bench. Each time Leo missed, he imagined Zippy's goofy grin reminding him to laugh and try again. Each time he succeeded, the palm tree's fronds rustled like applause.

Something magical happened. As Leo played, he noticed Zippy's googly eye seemed to sparkle more. The palm tree's shadows created funny shapes that looked like zombies dancing and playing padel too.

"Friends help us be brave," Leo told Zippy afterward, hugging his soft friend tight. "Even zombie friends!"

That night, Leo dreamed of a magical padel tournament under the stars, where stuffed animals and palm trees played together. Zippy won the trophy, but he gave it to Leo.

"For friendship," the dream-Zippy said. "The best magic of all."
