Worth the Risk
Maya's thumbs flew across her iPhone screen as she leaned against the bathroom sink, heart hammering. Instagram stories from the party already blazed across her feed—people cannonballing, laughing, looking perfect. Meanwhile, she'd spent forty-five minutes trying to tame her hair into something that wouldn't frizz at the first hint of humidity.
"You coming in or what?" Chloe's voice drifted through the door. "Everyone's asking about you."
Maya stared at her reflection. Her hair—normally her shield, her thing she could actually control—looked alien with the new layers. Too much change. What if she jumped in and it went full poodle-mode? What if people noticed?
Her iPhone buzzed. Another notification. Another FOMO-inducing snapshot of fun she wasn't having.
Then her dad's voice echoed in her head: *You'll miss everything good just standing on the edge worrying about the fall.*
Maya set her phone on the counter. Outside, music thumped. Somewhere, someone screamed laughed. Life was happening.
She opened the door.
Chloe's face lit up. "Finally! Come on, the pool's actually not freezing I swear—"
Maya kicked off her slides. Her hair frizzed in the humidity and she didn't smooth it down. Someone cannonbombed nearby, sending a wave sloshing over the deck. People laughed. No one was watching her. No one cared.
She took a breath and jumped.
The shock of cold. The chaotic splash. Breaking the surface, hair plastered to her face, she wiped her eyes and found Chloe grinning like crazy, already treading water beside her.
"See?" Chloe said. "Way better than watching from Instagram."
Maya laughed—really laughed, the kind that made her ribs ache. Her hair was a disaster. Her iPhone was somewhere on a bathroom counter, probably lighting up with notifications she didn't care about.
She dove under again, feeling lighter than she had in months.
Some things were worth the risk.
