Wild Things Don't Filter

Maya smoothed her dress for the tenth time, checking her reflection in the bathroom mirror. Perfect. The spinach smoothie she'd choked down that morning was already working—her skin looked glowing, or at least less like she'd been up scrolling until 3 AM.

"You coming back?" Chloe yelled from the hallway. "Everyone's doing TikToks!"

Maya grabbed her iPhone and followed, heart already doing that weird flutter thing it always did at parties. Her curated life—golden hour selfies, aesthetic study shots, the right Spotify wrapped—had gotten her invited to Jackson's party. But real life didn't have a filter.

The basement was packed. Someone shoved a red cup at her. Maya fake-sipped, hyper-aware of every angle, every potential candid moment. Her thumb hovered over her camera, ready to document how fun she was having, actually.

Then she felt it. Something in her teeth. She bolted upstairs to the bathroom.

Spinach. A massive, obvious piece of spinach, right in front. From her "healthy girl era" smoothie. She'd been smiling like that for TWO HOURS.

Humiliation burned through her chest. She'd posted three selfies. Three. With literal spinach in her teeth while pretending to be effortlessly gorgeous.

Maya pushed through the back door, gasping for air. The cool hit her instantly. She needed to go home, change her name, move to another country.

A rustle in the garden. Maya froze.

A fox—sleek, coppery, utterly unbothered—trotted past the patio, carrying something in its mouth. It paused, golden eyes flicking toward her, and kept going. No performance, no curation. Just doing its fox thing.

Maya laughed. A real laugh, ugly and relieved. The fox was wild and spinach-faced and probably smelled terrible, and it literally did not care.

Her iPhone buzzed in her hand—notifications, likes, DMs. She turned it off and shoved it in her pocket.

Back inside, she found Chloe in the kitchen. "You have spinach in your teeth," Maya said. "Just so you know."

Chloe grinned. "Yeah, it's from the dip. Want some?"

"Actually, yeah."

They ate messy spinach artichoke dip at 2 AM while everyone else performed for the camera. Maya posted nothing. It was the best social media she'd ever made.
