Wild Things at the Pool
Maya wasn't supposed to be at Jax's party. She definitely wasn't supposed to be standing at the edge of his pool, clutching a solo cup like it was a lifeline, while the varsity squad dominated the padel court behind her. They moved easy, laughing, golden and effortless, everything she wasn't.
"You gonna swim or just stand there looking like a cat in a bathtub?" Jax's voice cut through her spiral. He was at the other end of the pool, treading water, grinning.
Her stomach dropped. She'd never been good at swimming. Never been good at anything that required being seen.
Then something rustled in the bushes along the fence.
A fox slipped through the gap, its red coat catching the sunset, tail twitching. It moved like it owned the place — unbothered, wild, completely itself. The fox paused, watching them, eyes bright and unashamed.
"No way," Chloe breathed from the pool deck, phone already out. The padel game stopped. Everyone stared.
The fox didn't care. It stretched, settled in the grass, started cleaning its paw like it was the most natural thing in the world.
Maya realized she'd been holding her breath.
"Yeah, I'm swimming," she heard herself say. She set down her cup, stepped to the edge, and let herself fall.
The water shocked her senses cold. She kicked up, gasping, and somewhere between surface and bottom, something shifted. The fox watched. The cat next door yowled from somewhere beyond the fence. The padel court stayed quiet.
When she broke the surface, dripping and real, Jax was still grinning. But this time she grinned back.
Some things are wild. Some things learn to swim anyway. And sometimes the unexpected guest at the party is yourself.
