Wild Hair, Baser Glory

Maya's curls had always been—well, a lot. Thick, unruly, basically its own ecosystem. She'd spent hours trying to tame it, but today, before baseball tryouts, she'd given up. Her hair exploded around her head like she'd stuck a fork in an electrical socket.

"Nice hair, Einstein," called Ty, the school's self-appointed bully, who was stretching nearby. "Trying to contact the mothership?"

Maya's face burned. She adjusted her cap, but it only mashed the frizz downward.

"Whatever," she muttered, gripping her bat.

She'd wanted this forever—varsity baseball, not softball, because she was done with people assuming she'd choose the "girlier" option. But standing here, with her hair going full static explosion and Ty watching her every move like a hawk finding breakfast, she suddenly felt ridiculous.

"Batter up!" Coach Miller shouted.

Maya stepped in, first pitch coming straight down the middle. She didn't just hit it; she sent it soaring over left field's head, a perfect arch toward the gap.

"Run!" someone yelled.

She took off, legs pumping, dirt kicking up behind her cleats. Her hair streamed behind her like a crazy victory banner, wild and unapologetic. She rounded first, kept going—Ty's jaw actually dropped as she flew past second—headed for third, sliding in just safe.

"Holy crap," Ty whispered.

Maya stood up, dusting off her uniform. Her hair was completely wrecked now, a magnificent tangle around her shoulders. And for the first time ever, she didn't care.

"Nice hair," Ty said again, but this time without the smirk. "Seriously. That was... that was something else."

She grinned, wiping dirt from her cheek. Whatever happened next—whether she made the team or not—something had shifted. She was done apologizing for taking up space, done shrinking herself down to fit someone else's idea of acceptable. Her hair, her game, her unapologetic self.

Sometimes the things you think are your biggest flaws turn out to be exactly what makes you unforgettable.
