Where Palms Cast Long Shadows
The margarita was doing its job, blurring the edges of everything—especially the truth. Elena sat at the edge of the infinity **pool**, legs dangling in the chlorinated water, watching the sun dip behind the resort's signature **palm** trees. Three months ago, she'd been someone else entirely: a corporate **spy** hired to infiltrate Sebastian's biotech firm and steal their research on next-gen neural implants.
She'd done her job too well. Fallen in love. Failed to deliver the intel. Now they were both at this Mexican resort, playing at a fresh start, pretending trust wasn't a shattered thing they were trying to glue back together with tequila and tan lines.
"You're thinking about it again," Sebastian said, appearing behind her. His shadow fell across her **swimming** feet. "I can tell. You get this look."
"What look?" She didn't turn.
"Like you're somewhere else. Like you're still her—the woman who lied her way into my lab, my life."
The old code name, the fake credentials, the surveillance she'd compiled—she'd burned it all. But Sebastian couldn't forget. Neither could she, really. Some days, she missed the clarity of being the bad guy. At least then she knew who she was.
"I'm here," she said. "I chose you."
"Did you?" He sat beside her, close enough that their shoulders touched. "Or did you just choose to stop running?"
Elena turned then, really looked at him. The man who'd somehow become more important than the mission. The man whose heart she'd broken, whose life she'd derailed, all for a paycheck she'd never even collected.
"Both," she said. "But mostly—I chose this. Us."
He studied her face, searching for the lie. Finding none, finally. The sun disappeared completely, and the first stars appeared. Tomorrow they'd figure out what came next. Tonight, they'd just keep pretending that pretending could eventually become real.
