When the WiFi Died
Maya stood by the **water**, swirling her red solo cup nervously. Jake's pool party was supposed to be her moment—finally, after months of TikTok flirting and cafeteria glances, she'd make her move. But instead of living her best life, she was stuck watching Jake laugh at Chloe's jokes while Brooke and Tyler argued about playlists somewhere in the background.
"Maya! You coming in or what?" Jake called, splashing **water** at her.
She fake-laughed. "Maybe later!"
Her phone buzzed. Courtney had posted a story—Maya blocked it. Real mature. But like, she wasn't wrong. Maya had been talking about Jake for weeks, and here she was, lurking by the snack table like a total NPC.
Then the sky went purple-white. **Lightning** cracked directly overhead, and everyone screamed as the backyard plunged into darkness.
"Yo, what happened to the music?" someone yelled.
"Power's out!" Jake shouted. "Everyone inside, NOW!"
They all squeezed into the basement, wet and shivering. Jake's mom came down with flashlights, but then—nothing. No WiFi. No cell service. Just...
"The **cable** line's down too," Jake's brother announced. "Storm took out the whole street."
Maya's heart sank. Now she was trapped in a dark basement with her crush, her competition, and literally zero distractions. This was a nightmare.
But then Jake grabbed a guitar from the corner.
"Whatever," he said. "We don't need WiFi. Who knows 'Riptide'?"
Chloe rolled her eyes. "That song is SO 2022."
"Shut up, you love it," Brooke said, and somehow they were all singing, off-key and laughing at each other, and Jake kept looking at Maya like—actually looking at her.
When the lights came back three hours later, Maya didn't check her phone first. She just sat there, Jake's arm warm against hers, thinking maybe the universe knew exactly what it was doing.
Sometimes things had to break before they could get good.
