When the Sphinx Wore Papaya
Maya's hair refused to cooperate. Again. She'd spent forty-five minutes trying to tame the frizz that made her look like she'd stuck a fork in an electrical socket, but now her curls were doing whatever they wanted. Typical.
"You look like a zombie," her little brother Leo announced from the doorway, mouth full of cereal.
"Shut up, Leo." Maya grabbed her backpack and escaped before he could offer more helpful commentary.
At school, the hallway smelled like the cafeteria's failed attempt at papaya chicken. Maya's stomach churned. Today was the day—final presentations for English, and she'd rather literally explode than speak in front of everyone.
The school mascot, a papier-mâché sphinx that looked suspiciously like a depressed cat, stared at her from above the lockers. Its painted eyes seemed to say: good luck, you're gonna need it.
"Maya!"
Jordan. The guy she'd been lowkey crushing on since October was actually talking to her. Her brain short-circuited like lightning in a bottle.
"Hey, Jordan."
"You ready for the presentation?" He leaned against the lockers, effortlessly cool. Meanwhile, Maya's hands were sweating through her notes.
"Not really. I think I might actually die."
Jordan laughed, and it was better than she'd imagined—not that she'd imagined it or anything. "You'll kill it. Your hair looks awesome, by the way."
Maya's brain stopped. Her hair? The uncontrollable mess she'd been fighting with since seventh grade?
"Oh. Thanks?"
"Seriously, it's got personality. Unlike the rest of us sheep with our boring straight hair." He gestured at the crowd of students with identical sleek styles.
Something in Maya's chest loosened. All this time, she'd been trying to fix herself when Jordan thought her "flaws" were actually what made her stand out.
When she presented later, her hands still shook and her voice cracked once. But when she caught Jordan's encouraging nod from the back row, she kept going. The sphinx mascot seemed almost proud.
Maybe her hair wasn't a disaster. Maybe it was just... her. And maybe that was enough.
That night, Leo asked why she was smiling. Maya just ruffled his hair and didn't even try to explain.
