When the Screen Goes Dark
Maya's iphone lay face-down on the pool deck, a black mirror reflecting absolutely nothing of the chaos in her head. Two minutes ago, her group chat had exploded with screenshots of Jake's DM to someone else. Now she was at Chloe's birthday pool party, pretending everything was fine while her stomach did backflips.
"You coming in?" Chloe called from the water, surrounded by a shimmering circle of friends who all seemed so effortlessly perfect.
"Yeah, just finishing a text," Maya lied, slipping into the swimming pool with the kind of dramatic flair she usually reserved for Instagram stories. The cool water shocked her system, exactly what she needed. Why did everything have to be so performative? The perfect posts, the curated aesthetic, the carefully casual candid shots.
Her grandmother always said Maya was too worried about what people thought. "You're like a papaya," Nani would tell her in the kitchen, chopping the exotic fruit with weathered hands. "Outside, soft and sweet. Inside, so many seeds of overthinking."
Maya ducked underwater, letting the silence wash over her. When she surfaced, Chloe was floating nearby, not surrounded by the usual squad for once.
"You okay?" Chloe asked, actually looking at her for the first time all afternoon.
"Honestly?" Maya smoothed wet hair from her face. "Jake's cheating on me, and my entire group chat knows except me."
"Oh my god, I'm so sorry." Chloe paddled closer. "That's trash. He's literally been trying to slide into my DMs since freshman year. Block him."
Maya laughed, a real laugh this time. "Wait, seriously?"
"Deadass." Chloe splashed her. "You're too good for that. Plus, your papaya analogy from last summer? Iconic content."
Maya blinked. "You remember that?"
"I screenshot it," Chloe admitted. "It's motivational.
Floating there in the shimmering blue water, Maya realized she didn't need the perfect feed or the fake relationships. Sometimes the realest moments happened when you put down the phone and actually talked to people.
Later that night, Maya finally checked her phone. No new notifications from Jake. Just a message from Nani: Papaya smoothie for breakfast tomorrow? Your favorite.
Maya smiled, typed "Yes, please," and put her phone on do-not-disturb. Some things were better experienced than posted.
