When the Pyramid Crashed
Maya stood against the wall at Jake's party, feeling like a total zombie after three hours of pretending to have fun. The pyramid of red Solo cups towered near the keg, some kind of drunk engineering feat that everyone kept taking photos with. Maya just wanted to go home, but that would mean admitting defeat.
Then lightning flashed through the sliding glass doors, illuminating Connor in a grizzly bear costume—don't ask—and suddenly the power died. Someone screamed. Connor stumbled into the cup pyramid in the darkness.
CRASH.
The sound of plastic cups hitting everything was ridiculous and perfect. Maya found herself laughing along with everyone else, the weird tension of the party breaking apart. She looked over and caught Connor's eye—maybe he wasn't just the funny guy in the bear suit.
"You good?" she asked, navigating through the darkness.
"Bear's fine," he said, his voice different outside the performance. "You okay? You seemed like you were spacing out."
"Just tired of the whole pretending-to-have-fun thing," Maya admitted, surprised by her own honesty. The storm was getting worse outside, rain hammering the glass.
"Same," Connor said. "Wanna sneak out back? I think there's actual lightning worth watching."
They slipped out the back door, leaving the chaos of cups and costumes behind. The sky was putting on a show—electric streaks across the clouds, sudden illuminations that made everything feel possible and scary at the same time. They stood there in their own perfect silence, no need to perform.
"You know," Connor said, finally pulling off the bear head, "we should do this again. But minus the bear costume."
Maya smiled, feeling something like hope for the first time in months. "I think that can be arranged."
They walked back inside to find the power had returned, the pyramid destroyed, someone already cleaning up. But the awkwardness was gone too. Sometimes things have to crash to become real.
