When the Papaya Hit the Fan

The humidity in Maya's room was absolute trash. Her ceiling fan spun lazily, doing nothing but pushing hot air around while she stared at her reflection. First day at Santos Tropical Market, and her anxiety was doing backflips.

"You got this," she told her palm tree poster, the one with the inspirational quote about growing through what you go through. Lame, but whatever helped.

The market smelled like sunshine and processed sugar. Her cousin Rico worked the register, looking bored.

"Watch out for Mrs. Chen," he whispered, jerking his chin toward an elderly woman examining papayas like they were precious gems. "She's got palms that read your future and attitude that reads your filth."

Maya's first hour was basically a crash course in humility. She dropped three oranges. Two customers asked if she was new. The cable guy buying lunch seemed genuinely concerned about her.

Then Liam walked in. Actual Liam from AP Bio, who'd smiled at her twice this semester and didn't know she existed otherwise. He was reaching for a papaya when the universe decided she didn't suffer enough.

"Hey, aren't you in my—"

Maya's elbow knocked a whole display of tropical fruit. Papayas everywhere. Like, everywhere.

For three seconds, nobody moved. Then Liam started laughing. Not mean laughing—actual laughing, bent over, holding his stomach laughing.

"That was legendary," he said, helping her gather escaped papayas. "Last week, I faceplanted in the cafeteria. Tripped over a cable, lasagna went everywhere. It's still called The Lasagna Incident."

"Seriously?"

"Cross my heart. Want a papaya? My treat. Consider it trauma bonding."

Her palms were sweating. Her heart was doing something questionable. But Maya grabbed the papaya like it was a trophy.

"Deal. But only if you promise never to mention this to anyone."

"Your secret's safe with me." He grinned. "Besides, I'm pretty sure this makes us allies against the universe's weird sense of humor."

Walking home with her employee discount mango and Liam's number in her phone, Maya figured sometimes the most embarrassing moments were just the universe's way of breaking ice. Even if the ice had to be shattered by flying fruit.
