When the Papaya Hit the Fan
Marcus adjusted his dad's vintage baseball cap, trying to look like he belonged at Tyler's massive summer party. The hat was two sizes too big and kept sliding over his eyes, but it was better than showing up hatless and “looking like a total NPC,” as his sister would say.
His neighbor's chaotic golden retriever, Buster, had somehow escaped the backyard and was now sprinting toward the refreshment table with murder in his eyes. Marcus's heart raced. This was it — his chance to be the hero.
“I got this!” Marcus yelled, springing into action.
He dove for the dog, missed entirely, and crashed directly into the fruit platter. A solitary papaya, which Marcus didn't even realize people actually ate, launched into the air like a chaos projectile. It splatted perfectly against Tyler's brand new white jersey as he walked through the sliding door.
The music stopped. Forty people stared at Marcus, who was now wearing fruit salad as cologne and had an equally guilty-looking dog sitting on his chest.
“Dude,” Tyler said, looking at his ruined jersey. “Did you just papaya me?”
Marcus thought his social life was officially over. But then Tyler started laughing. Like, actually laughing. “That was iconic. No cap.”

By the end of the night, Marcus wasn't the quiet kid who borrowed his dad's hat anymore. He was “Papaya Guy,” legend of the summer bash. He learned that sometimes the most embarrassing moments become the best stories — and that weird tropical fruits make excellent icebreakers.
Buster even got a petting zoo corner. Marcus kept the hat, though. It had character now.
