When the Papaya Hit the Fan

Maya's cheeks burned as she stood at the edge of the court, clutching her padel racquet like it might save her from utter humiliation. The summer camp social was supposed to be chill — just some tennis variants and snacks — but somehow she'd gotten roped into a tournament against kids who'd been playing since they could walk.

"You got this!" Jace called from the sidelines, grinning that maddeningly confident grin that made half the camp swoon. Maya's heart did that stupid fluttery thing it always did when he looked at her, which was exactly the problem.

She'd been crushing on him since baseball season when he'd complimented her pitching form. Now here she was, about to embarrass herself in front of him, all because she couldn't say no to a dare.

The game started. Maya was actually kinda okay — until she spotted Jace watching from the bleachers, eating papaya from the fruit bar like some kind of tropical god. Her brain short-circuited. She missed an easy return, then tripped over her own feet.

"She's running on pure panic energy!" someone laughed. The nickname stuck instantly. Camp legend: Maya Panic-Runner.

Afterward, she hid behind the mess hall, fighting tears. Stupid. It was just a game, just a boy, just —

"Hey." Jace found her. "That move where you wiped out? Honestly impressive. I face-planted so hard learning baseball, my coach literally nicknamed me Bear. Like, I'm clumsy as hell when no one's watching."

Maya snorted. "Bear? Seriously?"

" Dude, I still trip over flat surfaces." He sat beside her. "Anyway, you're actually good at padel when you're not overthinking it. Want to practice tomorrow? No audience, just us."

Her heart did that fluttery thing again. But this time, she didn't hate it.

"Sure," she said. "But if I lose, you're buying me another papaya."

"Deal."
