When the Hat Hit the Water
Marcus stood at the edge of Jenna's pool party, clutching his snapback like a lifeline. The brim was pulled low, hiding the fresh breakout on his forehead that had appeared magically overnight. Great timing, universe. Really.
"Yo Marcus! You gonna stand there all day?" Tyler shouted, cannonballing into the water with a splash that drenched everyone within a ten-foot radius.
Marcus fake-laughed, adjusting his hat tighter. The pool glittered like crushed diamonds under the June sun, and everyone looked so effortless—so unlike him, standing there in his oversized shirt and dignity-preserving headgear.
Then chaos arrived in the form of Buster, Jenna's Golden Retriever, zooming across the deck like a furry torpedo. The dog clearly didn't understand personal space or social hierarchy.
Buster zeroed in on Marcus like he was made of treats. Before Marcus could react, one enthusiastic jump sent his snapback flying—arc-ing perfectly into the center of the pool.
The laughter died. Marcus's acne. His insecurity. Everything exposed.
But then Maya—quiet, studious Maya, who'd been reading on a lounge chair—slid into the water. She surfaced, grabbed the hat, and paddled back.
"Nice hat," she said, dripping wet as she handed it back. "I like the design."
Marcus stared at her, then at the hat, then at everyone watching. The tightness in his chest dissolved.
"You know what?" Marcus said, dropping the hat on a chair. "Screw it."
He dove in.
Later, floating on his back under the twilight sky with Maya and Buster both claiming the adjacent lounge chair, Marcus realized something: sometimes losing your hat is how you find your people.
