When the Dog Stole Third

Marcus stood near the concession stand, clutching a cup of **papaya** chunks like they were radioactive. His abuela had packed them for 'brain power' before his first varsity **baseball** tryout, because apparently nothing screams 'team captain material' like tropical fruit in a Ziploc bag.

"Dude, what are you eating?" Chloe asked, sliding up next to him. She wore her jersey backwards, the cool way everyone did, and Marcus felt his face heat up.

"It's papaya," he mumbled. "My abuela thinks it helps with... focus."

Chloe's laugh was like wind chimes. "That's honestly kind of adorable."

Adorable. Great. Exactly the vibe he was going for while trying to prove he belonged on the team. Before he could say something smooth—or anything at all—a golden retriever bounded onto the field, everyone's attention snapping away from Marcus and his embarrassing fruit.

"That's Mr. Henderson's **dog**!" someone shouted.

The dog, apparently channeling its inner athlete, snatched a baseball from near home plate and took off like it had just discovered fire.

"Someone get that ball!" Coach yelled.

Without thinking, Marcus thrust his papaya cup at Chloe. "Hold this."

He took off **running**, his cleats digging into the dirt. The dog wove between players, tail wagging like it was all a big game. Marcus matched its movements, cutting left when it darted right, until finally—finally—he managed to scoop the dog into his arms, baseball and all.

The team went wild.

"Nice hustle, rook!" Chloe called from the dugout, holding his papaya cup like a trophy. "We're keeping this."

Marcus stood there, dog squirming in his arms, abuela's fruit sitting safely in the dugout, and realized something: maybe fitting in wasn't about pretending to be someone else. Maybe it was about being the guy who'd chase a dog across a baseball field while everyone watched.

"You can have the papaya," he called back, grinning. "Trust me, it helps with focus."
